Capitol Lanes was the area’s largest bowling alley until closing in May 2004. The center had opened in 1980 with twenty-four lanes and expanded one year later to forty lanes, and then again in 1983 to fifty lanes.
In addition to bowling, the center also housed a cafe, bar, and arcade on the main floor. Below the bowling alley housed retail tenants, which over the time have included a gas station, golf store, office supply store, Greyhound Bus Depot, and Hair Hospital.
Capitol Lanes was owned by the Sagsveen family and was once the largest bowling alley in North Dakota. Its closure has left the state’s second largest city without a bowling alley. In response, Midway Lanes, in nearby Mandan, soon expanded to fifty-two lanes, two more than Capitol Lanes once had.
Capitol Lanes achieved a national spotlight, when in 1989, it hosted the Women’s International Bowling Congress tournament, which drew in 44,000 bowlers over the course of the tournament.
