Built in 1967, Wachter Middle School has seen several additions over the years, including two in the first two years of operation. Wachter was the first school in North Dakota to fully transition from the junior high format to the middle school format in 1991. Wachter takes its name from the Wachter Family, who denoted 10 acres of land to the city for its development.
This was the second school named for the Wachter Family, the first, built in 1918, was named for Charles Wachter, who had served on the school board at the time of its construction.
